Daltile’s generous donation of mosaic tile helped artist Reginald C. Adams and the people of Austin transform an ordinary underpass into the Absolute Equality: Unity Tunnel — 1,040 sq ft of hand-laid mosaic storytelling at the Longhorn Dam Bridge.

The Vision

What begins as a walk through an underpass quickly becomes something else entirely. The Absolute Equality: Unity Tunnel, located at the Longhorn Dam Bridge in Austin, Texas, is not simply a public mural. It is a love letter — written in tile, color, and collective memory — to the people who call East Austin home.

The project originated from a single, community-centered question posed to Austin residents: “What makes East Austin special to you?” The answers shaped every image, every scene, every square inch of the installation. Themes of day and night reflect the rhythms of neighborhood life. A painted ceiling mural draws inspiration from local flora and fauna. A custom flagstone pathway pays homage to the Colorado River. At the east and west entrances, ceramic handprints created by local residents greet visitors.

The Challenge

Transforming a concrete tunnel into a world-class public art installation required more than artistic vision. It required the right material, at the right scale, donated in a spirit that matched the ambition of the project.

Over 1,040 square feet of mosaic artwork needed to be executed with precision, permanence, and beauty. Each piece had to withstand the elements and the test of time, embedded in a public space that belongs to everyone.

The sheer scale of the hand-laying process was equally demanding. More than 698,000 individual tiles were placed by hand. Every tile had to be positioned with intention, forming a mosaic that would read as a unified whole while honoring the granular detail that makes it remarkable up close.

Through a generous tile donation supporting the City of Austin’s Art in Public Places / ACME Program, Daltile provided the mosaic material that became the literal and symbolic foundation of the Unity Tunnel.
